Shuran Huang 黃舒然 (she/her) is a Cantonese photographer based in Washington, D.C. Through seeing intimate moments, her work focuses on politics, immigration, human rights, diaspora experiences, and interactions in between.

Shuran speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and Spanish.

Born in a small Hakka village, Rénhuá (仁化), in China, Shuran's journey as an immigrant began when her father embarked on a career as an epidemiologist in other developing countries. Despite many hurdles, her parents’ mission to uplift communities in crisis never wavered. They formed a sort of two-person medical and community outreach team: her epidemiologist father provided medical care in communities suffering from disease outbreaks; her translator mother empowered communities by building education programs. Their selfless commitment helped Shuran realize the power of giving back to communities in need. Their passion drove Shuran to discover her tool for serving numerous communities: visual storytelling.

Shuran earned her master’s degree in photography from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in international journalism from Hong Kong Baptist University. Shuran is an adjunct professor and academic mentor at Sacred Heart University's School of Communication, Media, and the Arts.

Shuran received multiple awards, including American Photography 38, Society For News Design's 44th Annual Creative Competition, 2019 PDN’s Faces Portrait Photography Contest, 2019 Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward Competition, etc. She is also an alumna of the 2022 Eddie Adams Workshop XXXV, 2022 IWMF's Gwen Ifill Fellowship, 2019 New York Portfolio Review, and 2019 Dow Jones News Fund Digital Media Program.
